The Mintabie opal fields are well known for producing high quality opal, though production is down markedly in recent years. As in other parts of South Australia, Aborigines were the first to find opal here. They sold fine black opal at Coober Pedy during the first world war but it was many years before other miners braved the harsh conditions to mine the area.
